SHAW, Mark etc., 'Almost' 1991 EMI
INFO: This item is being sold through me by another seller. Mark Shaw (as many will know) was the lead singer of the late 80’s guitar-oriented Melodic Rock band Then Jericho. A quartet based out of London, Then Jericho had hits with ‘The Motive (Living Without You)’, ‘Big Area’, ‘Muscle Deep’, ‘What Does It Take’ (featuring Belinda Carlisle) and ‘Sugar Box’. As the 80’s came to a close sadly Then Jericho, (along with a number of other fine British Pop/AOR bands, such as T’Pau and the Cutting Crew) saw their luck dry up and the hits dwindle to nothing – even though some would soldier on over the coming years. Mark Shaw decided to go solo.
A debut release (‘Almost’) came out in 1991, but due to Mark and his record label (EMI) being embroiled in bitter arguments (apparently due to delays in the solo album coming out) promotion for ‘Almost’ suffered and subsequently passed most people by. Whilst Mark looked for a new contract a live album, by Then Jericho/Mark Shaw etc., and called ‘Alive And Exposed’, was released in 1992.
Anyway, what of ‘Almost’? Well, it is certainly a mature progression from anything Mark had done with Then Jericho and certainly showed his ability to take on new challenges. For Then Jericho fans (don’t fret), this album does retain enough of a signature vibe and certainly Rocks but for others who (if they’d known about it) would have welcomed something else, then there is a Bluesy edge to the proceedings. All I would say is, if all you have ever heard by Mark was with Then Jericho and you were not a big fan don’t dismiss this offering as you could very well be surprised at this album’s ability to present new things to you each time you give it a spin. This album is quite an obscurity now and comes highly recommended.
